The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) releases a bi-annual Bug Barometer, forecasting what to expect from pest populations in regions across the country.
The NPMA’s Bug Barometer is forecasting the following pest activities in the Southeast and Southwest, United States:
In the Southeast, Tropical Storm Cindy and Hurricane Irma left behind plenty of standing water, creating ideal mosquito breeding grounds. The warm, wet fall weather will also result in higher termite activity while a warmer winter season can yield above normal ant invasions through the winter months.
In Texas, Oklahoma and the Southwest, unusually warm temperatures will intensify cockroach and ant pressure, driving them to seek shelter in your home as the heat persists into fall. Expect to see more spiders and stinging insects scavenging outdoors with food still abundant in these warm conditions. The combination of flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey and warm temperatures can also increase mosquito populations until drier weather returns.
Tips To Prevent Fall & Winter Pests:
- Maintain a one-inch gap between soil and wood portions of your home.
- Keep mulch at least 15-inches from your home’s foundation.
- Seal cracks and crevices in the walls and foundation of your home.
- Eliminate sources of moisture or standing water around your property.
- Prune excess vegetation away from your home.
- Keep indoor and outdoor trash cans clean and sealed.
- Check and seal around window frames and under doors.
